As part of Dementia Action Week, Watford Borough Council and Everyone Active have partnered up to offer free 6 month passes for those living with dementia and their carers.
Throughout this time, participants will have access to all swim, gym and group exercise facilities at Everyone Active Watford sites (Watford Leisure Centre Central and Woodside Leisure Centre). The sessions will be shaped around their own goals and interests, including a weekly call from a dedicated member of the team to support their journey.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor said “Keeping physically active is just as essential to a person living with dementia as keeping their mind active. It is fantastic that we are able to offer this to our local community and ensure they have a space to exercise where they feel comfortable and supported.”
Dr Rahul Tomar, Consultant Psychiatrist, Early Memory Diagnosis and Support Service at the Hertfordshire Partnership Foundation Trust, said: “Whilst exercise is well known for its physical health benefits, there is also strong evidence it can improve mental health. Encouraging and supporting individuals to exercise should be on the agenda of all healthcare professionals, and being able to provide gym membership for people with a dementia diagnosis and their carers is a fantastic step forward."
Leanne Rodriguez-Reid, Sport and Physical Activity Development Manager at Everyone Active, said: “We are immensely proud to support Dementia Awareness Week in Watford. We recognise that having dementia can impact all aspects of life, which is why we want to play our part in ensuring people have the opportunity to enjoy physical activity regardless of their circumstances.”
